Chinese astronomer Yi Xing travelled south to chart Canopus in 724 AD
For people living in northern hemisphere, it once was a southern pole star until Magnetic compasses became common.In Mordern times Canopus's brightness and location well off the ecliptic makes it popular for space navigation. Spacecrafts carry a special camera known as a "Canopus Star Tracker" plus a sun sensor for attitude determination.
Canopus One of the stars of the Sapta Rishis / Ursa Major / Big Dipper, called the 'cleanser of waters'. Its rising coincides with the calming of the waters of the Indian Ocean.
The above article made me read about Sapta Rishis and the phenomenon of calming of the Indian ocean..my search continues...
